Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
